Project overview

Cranleigh, Surrey

We received a landmark planning approval for a modern country estate under ‘Paragraph 80’ of English planning policy which allows for one off homes ‘of exceptional quality’ in the countryside. The scheme received the full support of the regional Design Review Panel, who noted ‘it is our opinion that this is a truly outstanding proposal’.

The zero carbon design takes inspiration from the existing landscape context, at the confluence of woodland, meadow and water landscapes, with the building stretching out to organise and mediate between them. Generous living spaces and a swimming pool wing face south over a new pond, gently inflecting to follow the landscape contours and frame a lawn and aquatic landscape beyond. A northern range provides guest and leisure accommodation structuring a series of more intimate landscape spaces which provide variety amongst the woodland fringe and face out east across the meadow to the Surrey Hills.
