Project overview

London

This project seeks to create a distinctive yet respectful architectural response to the sensitive Bayswater Conservation Area context, and uses the seemingly restrictive protected Conservation Area setting to its advantage.

The varied modelling of neighbouring rear extensions provided a guide to the maximum extents for development, and within these parameters a logical geometrical order was established to mediate between the adjacent buildings.

A series of 15 degree inflections create angles and set-backs across the rear façade, whilst the envelope varies between large format glazed panels and full height limestone cladding which provide a tonal complement halfway between the stucco and London stock brickwork of the surrounding context.

The geometry is continued internally with a facetted stone stair case, a reinvention of the classical ‘cantilever’ stair with minimal contact between the solid stone treads.
