Project overview
Oxfordshire
Designed for cultured clients with a strong interest in Scandinavian modernist and mid-century design this contemporary country estate draws on a multitude of references to establish a rural base for the whole family to come together.
Set within a landscape of ancient beech woods on a hillside site in Oxfordshire, the house uses existing avenues through the trees to establish its geometric form with a series of wings reaching out from the central kitchen and dining space.
A central arrival court is framed by the wings of the building, with sloped metallic and planted roofs hovering over stone walls providing a rich materiality which continues throughout with a sense of craft and refinement. The wings frame views down the avenues in different directions with double height spaces maximising light within the property and engaging with the elegant verticality of the ancient beech trees. The natural slope of the hillside is used to minimise excavation for a subterranean swimming pool and spa facility.
