Project overview
London
Won in an invited RIBA competition this landmark new house of 900m2 in Stockwell, seeks to balance the demands of a striking contemporary dwelling, with the fine urban fabric of the Victorian Conservation Area.
By analysing the Conservation Area in detail we developed a design which used the existing building alignments to create a site specific but dynamic contemporary form which could still be shown to be sensitive to the prevailing historic context.
The building is separated into 3 blocks of 2-3 storeys, with a single storey lightweight glazed structure connecting between. A central courtyard space allows light deep into the plan and to a lower basement level, whilst first floor elements maximise views over the generous garden.
The street facades are deliberately restrained, but on the rear private garden facade a series of large circular openings provides a playful counterpoint, with ground floor living spaces opening out into the verdant private garden.
