Project overview

London

An elegant stucco fronted 1830’s Thomas Cubitt house had fallen into disrepair when Eldridge was appointed to breathe new life into it by the new owner. The existing 3-storey house had been divided into a sequence of small rooms accessed from a dark, winding central staircase.

The house was transformed into light-filled single spaces on the two upper level floors with two bedrooms at the lower level with new bathrooms built into the old vaults beneath the pavement. The new sculptural central staircase celebrates movement through the building and maintains a visual transparency with glass landings and balustrades. A new glazed opening cut through the back of the building from basement level to the roof floods the house with sunlight and new views are opened up to the green landscape of the rear gardens.
