Project overview

Putney, London

This house is both a highly bespoke home, representing the client’s work as an advisor on precious metalwork to the V&A museum, whilst also a prototype for off-site fabrication on a suburban infill site.

The large sections of Cor-ten steel were fabricated off-site, craned into place as full width elevation panels, and then welded together on site to form a structural exo-skeleton. Flush double glazed panes are bonded within this to create an angular geometry which both respects traditional forms such as dormer and bay windows, whilst striking a notably contemporary appearance. The house was fully supported by the local Conservation Officer who recognised that the progressive design respected the context yet also demonstrated a high quality contemporary response.

A relatively modest street frontage belies the size of the property which reaches back into the plot, and wraps around a fully glazed basement courtyard.
