Project overview

London

Located at the edge of Holland Park and Shepherds Bush, the Khalsa Jatha Gurdwara takes a prominent role in engaging with diverse local communities.

Eldridge was approached to assist them in developing a new teaching and education facility to assist with their community outreach work, and provide a base for religious study for local people and visiting overseas scholars.

The planning of the new proposals references the symbolism of the Sikh faith, with two new wings flanking the central Gurdwara reflecting the twin kirpan swords either side of the central khanda.

Maximising the opportunity provided by under utilised zones along the Gurdwara boundaries we developed a multi-level series of new education spaces which respect the existing window pattern allowing light into the Gurdwara hall, and connect below into the dining hall. A distinctive serrated roof form provides glazed lanterns to illuminate the upper level library, and the building cantilevers out at the corner to provide a sheltered entrance and visible teaching space above.
