Project overview

Surrey

Developed as a bold conceptual proposal for a unique site in the Surrey Hills National Landscape, this house appears to present a radical departure from tradition, but in fact is based upon the strong local precedent for notable tower houses throughout the Surrey Hills. From the nearby Munstead Water Tower, to Leith Hill Tower, to the white painted Ruxley Tower near Claygate and folly towers on Box Hill and in Caterham.

Acting as markers in the landscape these towers are celebrated, and our proposals follow this with a rotated series of bedroom levels rising from the ground floor reception rooms. Each floor presents a dramatic cantilevered form with a 90 degree splay from the central core, but in fact defines a simple square shape on plan.

The proposal seeks to directly respond to the wording of national planning policy paragraph 84e – ‘the design is… truly outstanding or innovative, reflecting the highest standards in architecture, and would help to raise standards of design more generally in rural areas’
